Campus carry and gun rights have long been an issue passionately supported by those on the right. Additionally, in many states, gun rights for college students on campus have been expanded in recent years citing safety concerns — particularly for women on college campuses.

However, one state may be taking it a step further to expand gun rights.

On Wednesday, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) signed a broad gun-rights expansion bill that would allow guns to be brought into college sports venues such as football and basketball games.

The bill is set to go into effect on Sept. 1 and will allow Arkansans with a concealed carry license who have also completed an eight-hour active-shooter training course to carry in many public locations, such as state colleges, bars and government buildings, according to The Associated Press.

However, the Arkansas Senate voted 22-10 Thursday to amend the law with an exemption that would exclude sporting events from the circumstance in which concealed carry would be allowed. The bill now moves to the House.

“This bill, in my view, reflects the will of the General Assembly, and is constitutional and will balance public safety and the Second Amendment.”

“It’s one of those areas where I don’t think the value offsets the risk,” Senate Majority Leader Sen. Jim Hendren (R) said before the vote. “There’s alcohol, there’s people getting excited and so probably I think most people agree that maybe this is one of those areas we ought to think about before we expand the privileges.”

The state’s public universities and colleges have vocally opposed the law, but spokespeople for the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State University said Wednesday they will work to comply with the legislation.
