Typically, the final performance featured on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest would be among, if not the best of the night. This year’s performance featured popular, experienced, 46 year old signer Mariah Carey. What could possibly go wrong?

The first song of Carey’s performance was “Auld Lang Syne,” moments after the start it became clear that the singer could not hear the backup singers which are needed for her to stay on beat. But after this it could have been reasonably expected that moving on would be much better.

The second song she was performing was her hit song from 1991, “Emotions.” During it she barely even sang at all. During it she stopped to tell the audience, “We didn’t have a [sound] check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to No. 1 and that’s what it is, okay?” She added, “Well, Happy New Year! We can’t hear, but I’ll just get through the moment.”

Also during “Emotions” she walked around the stage trying to get her earpiece back. She had taken it off and put it behind her shoulder. Carey asked her production crew to “Put these monitors on, please.”

It didn’t get better at all. With clear lip syncing Twitter and Facebook were abuzz about just how bad the performance was.
