Master Sgt. Debra Clayton was shot and killed at a Walmart in Orlando early Monday morning. According to the Orlando Police Department, she was a 17 year veteran to the police force, a wife and a mother of two children.
“She’s a hero who gave her life protecting the community she loves,” Chief Mina of the Orlando Police Department stated.
The suspect, Markeith Loyd, was accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend last month and had been on the run since. One shopper at Walmart tipped off the police Monday morning that Loyd was shopping at the store. When the police offer arrived, she walked to the door as Loyd barged out of the store and fired 12 shots at the officer.
Loyd was last seen fleeing the Walmart and heading to an apartment building. When Loyd got to the apartment building, he fired two more shots at a deputy in an unmarked SUV. The deputy was unharmed in the second shooting.
The Orlando Police Departments offering a $60,000 reward for information on the location of Loyd. An active manhunt is still going on to find Loyd, who is deemed armed and dangerous.
