After Betsy DeVos, the U.S. Secretary of Education, met with a men’s’ rights group, a professor at University of Kentucky went on the attack, calling her a ‘powerful handmaiden’ to the patriarchy.
Tweeting out an article about DeVos’ meeting with the National Coalition for Men to discuss Title IX issues, Dr. Marta Mack-Washington wrote, “A powerful handmaiden to a hegemonic white supremacist, capitalist, patriarchy did this recently.”
Mack-Washington deleted the tweet after Campus Reform reached out for a comment, but not before screenshots were taken.
Her LinkedIn profile states that Mack-Washington’s “primary research objective is to disrupt cultural narratives about race, ethnicity, and gender that silence and perpetuate structural manifestations of prejudice and discrimination within communities of color.”
It also continues:
“She also critically engages issues that emerge from social inequalities, particularly those pertaining to the intersections of class, gender, and race, and how individuals experience them,” noting specific interest in “the way these inequalities impact how Black athletes mobilize their identities.”
DeVos has been meeting with various groups about Title IX. This comes as a result of discussions in the Trump Administration about rolling back the authority and overreach on college campuses that President Obama gave the Office of Civil Rights in 2011. Along with various groups, DeVos has also been meeting with sexual assault survivors. She stated:
“I look forward to understanding the past actions and current situation better, and to ensuring that the intent of the law is actually carried out in a way that recognizes both the victim, the rights of the victims, as well as those who are accused.”
