Students from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign gathered at the offices of Rep. Rodney Davis yesterday demanding accountability.
The Illini Democrats have been trying to get the congressman to attend one of their town hall meetings for over a year now but have had no luck. The group got sick of Rep. Davis dodging their calls and refusing to represent them so they decided to make themselves a little harder to ignore.
As you can see in the video below, Rep. Davis is not too thrilled to have the disruption in his office. He continually dismisses the group and seems to be more interested in talking to his friend off-camera.
The group throws question after question at him, most centering on their desire for free higher education for everyone. The Representative eventually makes his leave and retreats to the privacy and safety of his office.
Illini Republic and Illinois College Republican Federation Executive Board candidate Marko Sukovic told Hypeline News: “We learn a lot of things from this video,” adding, “most importantly this teaches us a lot about what not to do. The chanting, shouting, and ambushing of elected representatives with a list of demands is no way to start a productive discussion. These students should apologize to Congressman Davis for the actions taken and should reach out to his office to have a productive, substantive conversation about the issues, not just an easy political statement.
What do you think of the student’s demand for free tuition? Was Representative Davis too dismissive of the student’s questions? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
