Like many 20-somethings out there, I occasionally dabble with dating apps such a Tinder. I live just outside of Portland Oregon, so needless to say you come across some people with some interesting viewpoints if you happen to be a conservative. Lately though I have noticed a bit of a disturbing change.
Many of profiles’ “About Me” have begun to include things such as:
“Trump voters swipe left”
“Don’t swipe right if you are a conservative”
“If you voted for Trump swipe left, then grab a knife and swipe your face” (my personal favorite)
It seems many women in the Portland Metro are intent at keeping conservatives and Trump supporters out of their dating pool entirely. Granted if your Tinder profile opens with the “I Stand with Planned Parenthood” filter or has a picture of you getting arrested at the anti-Trump protests downtown, the chances of us getting along in the first place probably aren’t great, but, hey, you never know.
There has been a lot of talk about “political bubbles” since the election and this just seems like another extension of that problem. People are unfriending folks Facebook because of politics, families are refusing to talk to each other, and now we can’t even casually chat up folks on dating apps if we supported different people for President.
I’m sure if I am not the only one who has noticed this trend. I just find it really depressing that opposition to the President elect has permeated the lives of some folks to the extent that they even include it on their dating app profiles, and the guy hasn’t even taken office yet.
I hope all of you out there find that special someone and that they don’t hate you for who you voted for in November.
