The film was directed by Pablo Larrain, who has directed previous movies such as “Tony Manero” (2008), “The Club” (2015), and “Neruda” (2016), which was picked as the Chilean entry for Best Foreign Language film for the 89th Academy Awards. Peter Sarsgaard will play the new found Kennedy patriarch, Robert F. Kennedy. Additional cast includes Greta Gerwig, Max Cassella, Beth Grant, and Billy Crudup.
“Jackie,” is already receiving wide critical acclaim. The film currently has a 96% approval rating on rotten tomatoes as well as a 93 out 100 score on Metacritic. In addition to overwhelmingly positive reviews, the film has also received several accolades this season including winning the “Best Screenplay Award” at Venice Film Festival and a “Platform Prize” for director Pablo Larrain at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The teaser trailer alone brings that familiar air of an Academy favorite. The trailer vividly takes us through the beginning of the Jackie’s “Camelot” and chronicling her life after, all while cleverly playing the soundtrack of Camelot. The trailer closes with eery dialogue from Jackie saying “There won’t be another Camelot, not another Camelot.” The trailer may appear simple but it is very powerful. Along with the beautiful cinematography, Portman brings Jackie Kennedy to life with emotion that speaks volumes, and with a voice eerily similar to the former first lady’s soft transatlantic accent. As award season steadily approaches there is no doubt that “Jackie,” will be a close film to follow.
