In my interactions with liberals, I’m frequently tempted to pull out a dictionary.
On my list of awful things leftist culture has done, the detachment of words from their actual definitions is probably near the top of the list. In an attempt to make everything in life subjective, they have tried to do the same thing to words that feed their agenda. But here’s the truth: definitions are objective and words have clear cut meanings.
To emphasize this, here are seven words liberals use incorrectly:
This word, is commonly conjoined with a word such as ‘homosexual’ or ‘Islam’. The left uses the word ‘phobic’ to describe those who disagree with things like homosexuality or who are concerned about radical Islamic terrorism. In all reality, the definition of ‘phobic’, when commonly used as a suffix, is ‘having an extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group’.
The key words in that definition are ‘extreme’ and ‘irrational’ in terms of ‘fear’ or ‘dislike’. A person who blows up a group of homosexuals simply because they disliked what they were doing is a homophobic; a person who disagrees morally with homosexual practice does not qualify. An Islamophobic would be a person who screams and runs away each time they see a Muslim (fear); a person concerned about the treatment of women under Islam or the radicalized terrorists coming out of the religion is not.
This word is used all over the place to describe anyone the left feels like targeting. The true definition of ‘racist’ is ‘a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another’ when used as a noun, or ‘showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another’ when used as an adjective.
There are truly racist people in this country; however, they’re frequently to be found on the left as well. You’re not truly seeking to drive out racism in the country if you’re using the word ‘racist’ in order to discredit people and being blind toward racist acts committed by people just like you.
Ah, my favorite of the redefined liberal words! ‘Tolerance’, to a liberal, means that you can’t speak up against, disagree with, or hold different opinions than they do. In order to be tolerant, you must agree with everything they say and refuse to question it. In reality, ‘tolerance’ is defined as ‘ the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with’.
‘Tolerant’ is defined as ‘showing willingness to allow the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with’. You’re showing tolerance by allowing freedom of speech and diversity of thought to happen, so clearly, it is the left that is intolerant.
This one is just silly. This word is used to describe the immigrants coming into the country without clearance; so, the correct word to use would be ‘illegal’. The definition of ‘undocumented’ is ‘not recorded in or proved by documents’. Technically, the definition allows it to be correct, but since it doesn’t acknowledge the illegality of the act, it is still flawed.
The left has a really hard time using this word. When somebody pledging allegiance to ISIS commits an act of terror, they are labeled as anything but a terrorist. The definition of ‘terrorist’ is ‘a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims’. Whether it’s domestic terrorism or radical Islamic terrorism, not using the actual word to describe the act just allows ignorance to be perpetuated.
Granted, this word is hyphenated, but it is used so quickly by the left that it needed to be added. If you disagree with a liberal, you’re just not being ‘open-minded’ in their book. The true definition of ‘open-minded’ is ‘having or showing a mind receptive to new ideas or arguments’. You don’t have to agree with ideas or arguments to be open-minded, you just have to be willing to listen to them. Again, something that is foreign to the bulk of the left.
In a liberal universe, showing patriotism means that you’re forgetting about or hiding everything wrong or flawed that your country has done; to them, it means you’re blindly following a flag, bordering on the edge of fascism. The actual definition of ‘patriotism’ is ‘the quality of being patriotic; vigorous support for one’s country’. You can acknowledge the wrongs of the country and still support them-it’s called using discernment.
