A response to Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes acceptance speech

First it was #OscarsSoWhite and now this!?

Last night at the Golden Globes, actress Meryl Streep delivered a political speech while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award. I’m all for freedom of speech, but is the Golden Globe Awards really the time and place to throw the President-Elect and Americans under the bus?

People are calling Streep’s speech “courageous”, “emotional” and “moving”, but in all honesty, this is just another case of a rich, coastal liberal in a room full of more rich, coastal liberals acting like they know everything about politics while trashing Republicans and their supporters in middle America. Doesn’t sound very courageous if you ask me.

Streep began by naming celebrities from all across the globe who are now some of the biggest names in Hollywood, claiming that the industry is full of outsiders and foreigners. According to her, if we kick them all out, Americans would have nothing left to watch but Football and Mixed Martial Arts, which “is not art.”

Excuse me, Meryl? You and your Hollywood elite friends may not enjoy football and MMA, but a large portion of the country does and you should not bash them for that. Many of those people are also the ones who view your work. I love the show Scandal, and I think Olivia Pope is a badass. However, once I saw Kerry Washington tearing up during this extremely contradictory speech, a little part of me wanted to delete it from my Netflix queue.

As if trashing flyover Americans wasn’t enough, Streep then proceeded to trash President-Elect Donald Trump by saying that his performance of mocking a disabled reporter “sank hooks into her heart.”

Newsflash, Meryl, that didn’t actually happen. Maybe if you would hop off of your high horse, get out of your perfect Hollywood bubble, and actually pay attention you’d know that.

Trump has constantly de-bunked this rumor. At one rally, he mocked a flustered Senator Ted Cruz. In the same rally he mocked a flustered reporter, he also mocked a flustered general. He made the same exact imitations and gestures all three times. Last time I checked, Ted Cruz and the general weren’t disabled, so why did the Washington Post fabricate the narrative that the reporter was? If Streep wanted to bash Donald Trump, she should have bashed his acting and impersonation skills.

However, she continued by claiming that Trump outranked this “disabled” reporter in “privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back.” Really? Let’s take a look at you, Meryl. Last time I checked, you and your fellow entertainers in Hollywood outrank nearly all of flyover America in those same aspects.

Streep preached that “disrespect invites disrespect,” and that when “the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.” To me it seems like she’s using her position to bully and disrespect everyone who voted for Donald Trump and enjoys watching football and MMA. Once again, hop off your high horse.

Lastly, Streep encouraged her fellow actors to join her in a committee to protect journalists, as they are going to be needed in calling out power and holding them accountable. Are you freaking kidding me? Meryl and Hollywood elites don’t want good journalism. They don’t want to “safeguard the truth,” they want protection for their candidate, Queen Hillary Clinton.

They only want protection for journalists like George Stephanopoulos, who donated $75,000 to the Clinton campaign over the span of two years, then tried to hide it while Hillary was running for President. How about Meryl and her Hollywood friends safeguard me for calling her out; I doubt that’d happen.

I’m really fed up with these Hollywood elites calling themselves outsiders, praising their diversity and politicizing these types of events. Of all people, they should be the ones mature and accepting enough to receive an award without throwing those who have differing viewpoints under the bus.

Hollywood has one job: to entertain.

So how about Meryl Streep and everyone else in the industry sticks to entertaining, and let the rest of us battle out politics.
