ACLU Suing Trump Administration Over Transgender Military Ban

ACLU Suing Trump Administration Over Transgender Military Ban

The American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU) has come to the decision to sue the Trump administration over the recent decision to ban transgender individuals from enlisting in the United States Military. The decision to sue came after the implementation of the ban that occurred on Friday. The ban came from Trump himself a few weeks ago when he stated that the Military could not be burdened by the “tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail”.

ACLU tweeted early this morning that they would be taking the administration to court on the grounds that “The ban is based on uninformed speculation, myths and stereotypes, and a desire to harm transgender people.” I’m not sure where the harm is coming from to trans military personnel, but ACLU seems to think that the decision is a violation to the constitution. As of now it is believed that somewhere between 4 and 10,000 current members of the United States military are transgender. That is a pretty small percentage of the approximate 2.8 million people currently serving the U.S. military.

ACLU Claims Trump’s Argument is Invalid

Joe Block, senior staff lawyer for ACLU’s LGBT & HIV Project, stated on ACLU’s website that “Each and every claim made by President Trump to justify this ban can be easily debunked by the conclusions drawn from the Department of Defense’s own review process” He also added that “Allowing men and women who are transgender to serve openly and providing them with necessary health care does nothing to harm military readiness or unit cohesion.”

According to United Press International, suicide and suicidal tendencies are considerably higher in transgender individuals than the general population. In fact, transgender citizens are 22 times more likely to attempt suicide than the average American, and that number is steadily rising. Add that in to the already high rate of military suicide (About 30 deaths per 100,000 citizens) and we have a recipe for disaster. As the wife of a military veteran, I have seen first hand how the military can affect a person’s mentality. Depression and suicide rates in the military are already too high— adding in a high risk group would only increase this number, and make it more difficult to control this epidemic.

Trump Standing By His Decision

The ban affects prospective military recruits from being able to enlist in any branch of the military if they identify as transgender. It also will halt the military funding on gender reassignment surgeries for current active transgender members. As of now, it is unclear whether current members of the armed forces who identify as trans are going to be relieved from their duty.

In his press release on Friday, Trump stated that “Every person who puts on the uniform makes our nation proud,” Trump said. “They all come from across our land. They represent every race, ethnicity, and creed. But they all pledge the same oath, fight for the same cause, and operate as one team – with one shared sense of purpose.”

It is clear that Trump has a great deal of respect for the military, and I don’t believe that he is trying to ‘harm transgenders’ as ACLU stated. I believe that he is looking out for the best interest of all members and future members of the United States Military.
