Anti-Christian Trilogy “His Dark Materials” Will Be Made Into BBC Television Show

Anti-Christian Trilogy “His Dark Materials” Will Be Made Into BBC Television Show

Ten years ago, New Line Cinema released a film that was supposed to be the next Lord of The Rings and another epic fantasy adventure. The Golden Compass was based on the first book in His Dark Materials trilogy, Northern Lights. However, the film received much criticism and was banned by the Catholic Church for being intentionally anti-Catholic and promoting atheism. In one of the trailers, the film is even compared to Lord of The Rings and made to look like an innocent child appropriate film. While the movie has been toned down, it was done with the intention of getting children interested in the books.

Ultimately, the movie bombed at the box office and sequels were quickly canceled. Many people speculated that the Catholic Church had killed off the franchise. However, the real reason was that the movie was poorly made. A watered-down version of the book, the movie “is reduced to impressive visuals overcompensating for lax storytelling,” according to Rotten Tomatoes composite ratings–where the movie has a low rating of 42% with an audience rating of 51%.

The British Broadcasting Corporation announced two years ago that the trilogy would be turned into a television series. Jack Throne will adapt Philip Pullman’s trilogy for TV. Some of his other projects include The Fades, This Is England, Skins, and Glue. He also collaborated with JK Rowling on her upcoming play, Harry Potter, and the Cursed Child. “It is such an honor and a privilege to be given this opportunity to delve into Philip Pullman’s world,” he said. Julie Gardner, former Doctor Who producer, will also assist on the show.

While no casting decisions have been shared, star of the movie adaption, Dakota Blue Richards, has shared her interest in being a part of the series. The show is still under production with new information continually being released. The first season of the show will have eight episodes with multiple seasons if the show is successful. While the show has yet to announce a release date, IMDb recently added the show on their website and it is possible that the show will be released sometime next year.

Last month,  Philip Pullman published his newest book, The Book of Dust. This book is a companion to His Dark Materials trilogy. It is possible that this new book will influence the TV series. As Pullman serves as an executive producer of the show, it is clear that the TV series plans to be more accurate to the books than the movie adaption was. From an author whose mission is to destroy religion in the eyes of children, this will be a TV show that many Christians will be boycotting.
