British researchers conducted a $60,000 study, funded by public dollars, to find that gender bathroom signs are discriminatory. Sheffield Hallam University conducted the study, asking people if they believe they should be able to choose which bathroom they should use.

It found that people feel discriminated against because of bathroom signs. The study recommends that bathroom signs should not read “Men” or “Women” or “Ladies” or “Gentlemen.”

Instead they should read “Toilets with Urinals” or “Toilets without Urinals.” According to the study, this will eliminate people and specifically transgender people from feeling uncomfortable about which bathroom they use.

Dr. Jenny Slater, who ran the study, released the following statement:

“Toilets are at the heart of the important discussions about how we understand our own identities. The starting point for us is to explore how disabled people and those identifying as trans, gender-queer or non-binary are treated in modern society.”

The study went beyond this, stating that other parts of bathrooms are offensive as well — including that bathrooms should provide a sink for Muslim women to clean themselves before prayer as well as relabeling bathrooms for disabled people to, “Larger Toilet with Grab Bars.”

Their final recommendation?

Replacing hand dryers with paper towel holders because some people become “stressed” by the noise of the hand dryers.
