On March 22, President Donald Trump unveiled an executive order mandating free speech on college campuses. Later that day, Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, and Ethan Bearman, host of The Ethan Bearman Show, appeared on Fox News to debate the necessity of this mandate.
The President said this order is needed across the nation:
“Under the guise of speech codes, safe spaces, and trigger warnings, these universities have tried to restrict free-thought, composed total conformity, and shut down the voices of great young Americans.”
Kirk’s opposer states that the ACLU already has these requirements in their guidelines, calling the order nothing but an “excitement” on the right.
The American Council on Education is quoted as saying, “no matter how this order is implemented, it is neither needed nor desirable, and could lead to unwanted federal micromanagement of the cutting-edge research that is critical to our nation’s continued vitality and global leadership.”
To the order’s defense, Kirk states that it is without doubt needed, as he has been on hundreds of college campuses since TPUSA’s founding and has seen the blockage of ideas firsthand:
“Just this last semester, I was not allowed to speak at two universities – cornell university and depaul university – because they cited ‘safty concerns.'”
Kirk, going further, says that his speech at the University of California Berkeley came at a price of over $15,000 in security fees alone. Without such security, the university would not have let Kirk speak.
“It’s not just a conservative issue… I want all different opinions to be heard”
– Charlie KIrk
“I think college campuses should be a marketplace of ideas,” Kirk continued. He points out that college campuses today appear to be more left-leaning when it comes to political stances. Kirk says he only wants for everyone’s viewpoint to be expressed.
Kirk makes clear that universities are not similar to social media platforms, as they do not receive federal funds. He believes that universities must be held accountable for suppressing opposing viewpoints.
