The Christmas Tree Lighting speech did not downplay the holiday’s religious background
Besides the many guest stars, the current president always gives a Christmas speech. This year, President Trump gave a speech in which he repeatedly said, “Merry Christmas” and mentioned “God” several times.
President Trump’s speech
“Today’s the day that I’ve been looking very much forward to all year long,” President Trump began. He said that it was his tremendous honor to wish all of America and the entire world a “very Merry Christmas.” He went on to thank everyone who was involved to help make the event successful. President Trump explained that since President Calvin Coolidge first began the Christmas tradition in 1923, every president since then has partaken in the event.
“From the earliest days of our nations, Americans have known Christmas as a time for prayer and worship, for gratitude and good will, for peace and renewal,” President Trump said in a statement. He said that both he and Melania were full of joy and thrilled to think of all those Americans whose spirits are lifted by the miracle of Christmas. Christmas is a Holy season, it is “the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
“The Christmas story begins 2000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son, and the most extraordinary gift of all, the gift of God’s love for all of humanity.”
President Trump: ‘God bless you and God bless the United States of America’
President Trump finished his speech by thanking all those who help make America great. All those who serve the needy, all the armed forces both here and abroad who keep America safe, law enforcement officers who patrol and keep the streets safe, teachers, pastors and all those “people that have taught us so much, for their leadership in our communities and our society.”
As he concluded:
On behalf of Melania, myself, Barron, all of my children, all of my grandchildren — they’re here with us tonight — I want to thank you. God bless you and God bless the United States of America. Thank you very much. Merry Christmas everybody.
The tree lighting event will air on the Hallmark channel on December 4th at 7/6c and run until 8.
