In her confirmation hearing for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos championed hard for school choice. She believes parents have the right to choose the education that best suits their children, whether it be virtual, private, public, or homeschooling.
Betsy DeVos stated,
“I am a firm believer that parents should be empowered to choose the learning environment that’s best for each of their individual children.”
The confirmation hearing is under intense scrutiny from Democratic Senator Patty Murray from Washington who believes DeVos wants to gut the funding for public education and increase support for charter and private schools. Murray also accused DeVos of wanting to privatize public education for investors and entrepreneurs. Sen. Murray, who is formerly a preschool teacher, has a deep passion for the public school system and low-income families.
However, Betsy DeVos and her husband, Dick, also have a passion for the education system. In 1989, they founded the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, which focuses on transforming and gaining support for education, community, arts, justice, and leadership.
Together, her and her husband have pushed for school choice, advocating for school vouchers to allow kids to attend private schools. They have headed up PACs and headed up organizations that sponsor children and give out scholarships to those who want to attend something other than a public institution.
DeVos believes it is an injustice that parents cannot choose which schools their children attend because of income or zip code. If confirmed, she has vowed to institute vouchers and make it easier for parents to choose schools that best suit their children, regardless of income or zip code.
She may bring major changes to the federal level in the Department of Education. Whether or not that it will be good changes…that is for you to decide.
