Hollywood sign vandalized to look like ‘Hollyweed’

The iconic Hollywood sign that overlooks Los Angeles was vandalized early Sunday morning to read “Hollyweed.”

L.A. Police Officer Christopher Garcia, who works in the agency’s security service division, said that the prankster used tarps to make the O’s in the sign look like E’s.

Garcia said that surveillance footage showed the vandal changing the sign between midnight and 2 a.m. local time.  Police believe the suspect was a man, but the darkness and the rain from that night makes it too difficult to determine his race or height.

Authorities finally took down the tarps at about 11 a.m., restoring the sign to its original lettering.

“We don’t know who did it but park rangers are going up there very soon to take down the draping that was put on top of the ‘O’ to alter the sign,” said Estevan Montemayor, a spokesman for Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu.

Sensors are placed around the sign that trigger an alarm for police, but they are avoidable because they are only in certain areas of the sign.  There is also a public road that makes the sign accessible by car and on foot.

“We believe this person came from behind the sign,” Garcia said.

The last time the sign was vandalized to read “Hollyweed” was 1976.

Vandals have altered the sign in different ways many times before.

The “Hollyweed” message was likely triggered by the November ballot issue passing in the election to make recreational marijuana legal in California for those 21 and older.
