Poll: 1/3 of NFL viewers are boycotting games because of National Anthem protests

Rasmussen Reports has released the details of a recent poll that shows that at least 32% of those surveyed said they were less likely to watch an NFL game because of the large number protests during the National Anthem. This is opposed to 13% who said they were more likely to watch the games because of the protests.

The protests, started by San Franscio 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, has spread to other football players across the nation.

The hashtag #BoycottNFL has been trending every weekend since the National Anthem protests. Numerous people are upset, calling the protest disrespectful to the flag and veterans. A large number vowed to turn away from the NFL until players stand at attention for the anthem.

This poll may explain one reason why NFL viewership on networks has been down ten percent.

Wall Street Journal reports:

So far this season, viewership on those networks is down about 10% from last season, according to Nielsen, with steeper declines for prime-time games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday. The drop has caught advertisers and rights holders off guard and left them scrambling to find a cause.

One other factor has been the presidential debates. The first debate that occurred on Sept. 26 drew over 84 million viewers, which cut into ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” Another reason why viewership has been low is the lack of all-star players being on the field. Players such as New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Another player missing is former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who has retired.

Whatever the reason or reasons, this football season has seen poor viewership week after week.

Still, the poll is telling that people are serious about boycotting NFL games. The hashtag, #BoycottNFL, has shown great prominence on social media.

Almost one year ago, the NFL set all-time records in viewership, but now the league is on pace for its lowest ratings in years.

The #BoycottNFL movement is growing, and continues to lower the viewership of the NFL.
