I like to sleep. Heck, it might be one of my favorite pastimes ever. But while I still have some post-New Year motivation, I have found myself waking up earlier and earlier, and I have not felt better in a long time.
My roommate and I have been trying to run every morning and so far we have been successful in that. While I used to sleep in until about 8:00am or 9:00am every morning, I now find myself waking up at 6:00am. This has been a great change for many reasons. I feel healthier because I am getting up and being active.
I feel more productive because most days I can usually get many of the things that I have to do done before I would even be up and around on a regular day. During the winter it tends to get dark pretty early, so I am getting more time in the sun by waking up earlier.
Originally, I planned to make up for this loss of sleep time by going to bed earlier. But I am a 20-something who likes to stay up late hanging out with friends or far more often binge-watching shows on Netflix. That is when I discovered the late afternoon nap. A quick hour and a half nap after I get home does wonders and meets all my sleep needs.
Mornings are a great time to get things done. Other people are rarely bothering you for stuff, so you can work on your projects without getting a bunch of texts or emails. Lines at places like Starbucks are shorter, so you are free to take full advantage, and hopefully you can avoid traffic.
They say it takes 21 days to establish a habit, so I would challenge you to attempt to establish the habit of waking up a bit earlier for it. Decided on something that you want to get done, whether it is getting more work done, running, going to the gym, or whatever, and just get up and do it.
You won’t regret it.
