OPINION – DACA
At the conclusion of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, it reads:
“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”
The idea behind this statement is that revolutionary pigs (who were fighting against oppression from man) evolved into the same exact thing they proclaimed they were fighting against. The pigs sold out all of their supporters (the other animals on the farm) by telling them what they wanted to hear just to gain their support. On September 13th, if all reports are accurate, President Trump let out his first ‘oink.’ As reported by various news outlets late Wednesday night, Congressional Democrat leaders came from a meeting with President Trump announcing they will jointly pursue an agreement protecting the children of illegal immigrants from deportation through the DACA program.
President Trump campaigned on ‘draining the swamp.’ So far, it looks like the swamp is draining him.
Former Speaker of the House and current House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said they reached an agreement with President Trump to “enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides. This is a massive pivot of sorts for the Trump Administration who earlier this month announced it was cutting down DACA over the next six months and passing responsibility on to Congress to arrive at a legislative resolution. For months Trump condemned Congressional Democrats as ‘obstructionists’ yet now has appeared to submit to them.
According to Fox News, there are an estimated 800,000 children of illegal immigrants who are covered by DACA. While it certainly is seductive to have compassion for the children of illegal immigrants who entered our country as a result of their parents’ criminal actions, this deal would be a betrayal to Trump supporters and his base. To those who supported his message of “looking out for the forgotten American worker,” this is a metaphorical punch to the gut.
Additionally, as reported by Fox News, an anonymous source briefed on the meeting confirmed that “Trump and the Dem leaders agreed to pair the DREAM Act, which provides for giving young illegal immigrants eventual citizenship, with some measures enhancing border security.” As aforementioned, the same source said the security measures do not include an agreement for Trump’s much-ballyhooed wall across the U.S.-Mexico border. The only potential saving grace from this meeting was the tweet issued by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that said:
While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.
President Trump ran a campaign on the slogan “Make America Great Again.” A building block of that campaign platform was building a border wall. Frequently, while campaigning, candidate Trump touted his negotiating savvy. The border wall was paramount to the success of his campaign. Approximately eight months into his term, there have been zero miles completed of the border wall. There have been zero dollars put forth for construction of the border wall. There have been zero executive orders put into action for the border wall. There have been zero pieces of legislation passed by Congress for construction of the border wall. After tonight’s revelation, if it is indeed true, consumers might want to seek a refund for their purchase of The Art of the Deal.
This is a scary sign that should give Trump supporters worry. Either Trump is playing an extreme version of 4-d chess or embracing the axiom “keep your friends close but your enemies closer” or the MAGA agenda could be showing chinks in the armor. It has been validated that Congressional Republicans are worthless, do-nothing, demagogues but Trump was supposed to be the knight in shining armor. If D.C. was the swamp, Trump was supposed to be the Swamp Fox.
The conservative populist message that Trump was victorious with has been victim to a vicious onslaught by the political left and the mainstream media ever since his inauguration. Day after day, the Trump administration is subjected to vicious attacks with hopes of undermining their accomplishments, achievements, and message. Over the past couple of months, several people have left the Trump administration that left his supporters concerned his message was being diluted from its original content. With the exile of people such as Steve Bannon and Dr. Sebastian Gorka, rumblings emerged that Trump was pursuing an agenda that differed from what carried him to victory in November. If this deal between the not-so-dynamic duo of Pelosi and Schumer and President Trump is true, Trump’s base worse fears could be coming to fruition. And, once again, the forgotten American worker will be the victim of progressive politics. Sadly, Trump supporters thought they purchased an elephant but instead were delivered a mule.
