It’s that time again, time for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. As is the case for every Olympic Games, the world will be watching and anticipating the athletes’ every move. This year, it seems that our country could benefit from the Games now more than ever. With our country divided on politics, we seem to have forgotten that we are all Americans that help contribute to our great nation. The Olympics is the perfect time to rekindle our love for our country and bring Americans together.
The Olympic Games represent unity and remind us that we are all people of the same world
The Olympic Games started in ancient Greece to honor their god Zeus. At that time, only men could participate in the only event being a 192-meter footrace called the stade. Over the years, the Olympic Games have evolved to include women in 1990 and more events. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 with the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix in the French Alps in 1924, according to HISTORY.com.
This year, the Games will be the largest they have ever been with a record-breaking number. According to ABC News, there will be 92 countries with 2,925 athletes competing in the games. While the Games are no longer held to honor Zeus, they represent something much more profound: unity. In a time of war and division, the Olympic Games unite and remind us that we are all people of the same world. For two weeks, athletes from all over the world will come together to compete. Their sportsmanship and respect for the Games, their country, and fellow athletes is something that we, as Americans, can admire and strive for.
For too long, our country has been divided and has used politics as an excuse to mistreat one another
While Americans will not always agree, we have used politics as an excuse to abuse and mistreat one another for far too long. Our differences are what make us unique and are what makes America such a great and diverse place to live. It’s crucial for Americans to start accepting one another and learn to work together. We can look at the upcoming Olympic Games as a model for America. We should watch and celebrate the Olympic Games because they represent unity. The Olympics celebrate diversity while reminding us that it is possible to put aside our differences and work towards a bigger goal: peace. If athletes from around the world can come together, respect one another and the Games, surely, we as Americans can learn to work together?
